The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is empirical research conducted by faculty members in their own college classrooms, with the goal to improve teaching and enhance learning. SoTL usually involves applying specific approaches within a course in order to augment the quality and degree of student learning and assessing the impact of those approaches on learning. After the course, the researcher reflects systematically on the findings and makes them public via presentation or peer-reviewed publication. The pedagogical suggestions that derive from such inquiries are “evidence-based,” since their efficacy is supported by results in the field rather than hypothesized by speculation. Finally, SoTL aims to promote a broad interdisciplinary conversation about best pedagogical practices.
